When a patient accepts care in the Chiropractic office, there is usually a treatment plan which is mapped out, which includes the type of treatment that will be given, how long the treatment plan will be, and any other instructions and recommendations given to the patient to perform when they are not in the office. One of the more common recommendations given to the patient, especially if the patient has a lower back pain complaint, of a case of sciatica, is to limit the amount of the time that the patient is in the seated position. The main reason for this is that the most force that is put upon the lower back is in the seated position, when comparing lying, standing and sitting. For example, it is highly recommended that whenever anyone takes a trip in an automobile, they should take frequent stretch breaks, at least every 1 to 2 hours. Getting out of the vehicle and stretching, even if it is only for a few minutes, lowers the pressure exerted on the lower back when compared to sitting for a prolonged period of time while travelling inside the vehicle.

Businesses are finally becoming mindful of this, and realizing that sitting behind a desk for 8 hours + per day is not healthy at all. In fact, many studies have confirmed this. The American Heart Association states that sedentary lifestyle, also known as too much sitting, significantly increases your risk for heart attack and stroke, and is directly connected to obesity, high blood pressure, and abnormal cholesterol levels. In addition, according to the American Diabetes Association, too much sitting can increase the likelihood of a person developing Type 2 diabetes by as much as 91 percent.

It is not something that should be ignored that we are sitting too much; in fact, we are actually sitting more and more as the decades go on. In the 1960’s, one would think that more time was spent sitting on the job than today, especially in our current health-conscious culture. In actuality, the average sedentary time in the 1960’s was about 26 hours a week. By way of comparison, by the end of the first decade of the 21st century, we now sit on average of 38 hours a week! It is also known that the average office worker spends 10 hours sitting per day as well!

The solution that a lot of businesses are taking notice of is that if their employees are standing more while on the job, they are healthier, more energetic, and ultimately, more productive. This is done by utilizing adjustable height “standing” desks, and encouraging two to four hours a day of it. If this is not feasible in your office to have a standing desk, or you are simply not able to do any standing for lengthened prolonged periods due to medical conditions such as hip and knee arthritis, do not despair. You still can get up and take a few minutes to stretch every hour, and even try an exercise ball to sit on periodically instead of your normal desk chair. This will take pressure off of your lower back, and help your balance as well.

The use of the standing desk can be used in the office work station setting, as well as in the home study or home office area. Either way, you will find that your back will thank you for it in no time at all.
