When you’re in a lot of pain, it’s easy to reach for a bottle of ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Headaches, back aches, neck aches… really any kind of “ache”, and a quick fix is taking two tablets and moving on with the rest of your tasks for the day. But one of the possible issues with this is that the root issue may not be resolved, and after a while it can be detrimental to your body to try to filter through the anti-inflammatories that often. So another option is to use a topical analgesic, also known as a pain relieving cream. In our office, we recommend Cryoderm the most, as we’ve found it works the best.
Why Cryoderm? Most people reach for a bottle of Icy Hot or Tiger’s Balm, as those are the easiest to find at a local drug store. There are, however, some big differences between these brands and Cryoderm! It all has to do with the active ingredient: menthol. It comes down to concentration – Icy Hot, at the extra strength version, has 7.6% menthol. This is compared to Cryoderm, which has 10% menthol.
The concentration of menthol isn’t the only difference; Cryoderm is made from more natural ingredients than Icy Hot. Instead of other chemicals, Cryoderm uses extracts from other plants to assist with the healing process. Another option that’s similar is Biofreeze, as it’s also naturally derived, but the menthol concentration is about 4%. We asked many patients to test both out for us, and in the end Crydoderm was the favorite.
The only caution, as with all topical analgesics, is to be cautious of skin reactions. The higher amount of menthol can cause irritation if you have more sensitive skin. This is why we still recommend Biofreeze as another natural option. But for optimal pain relief, Cryoderm is the best we’ve found.
