It’s impossible to ignore the changing healthcare systems in the last few years. With the signing of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare, medical insurance has been altered drastically. With mandates that require everyone to have some form of insurance, there are very few options available. For many families, Covered California means high monthly payments, but reduced benefits and high deductibles. With that unhelpful combination, alternatives are a necessity. One option is Samaritan Ministries.

What is Samaritan Ministries?

Based on Biblical verses such as Galatians 6:2 (“Carry each others’ burdens, and in this way you fulfill the law of Christ.”), Samaritan Ministries is a need/share based organization.

Each family is assigned a set share, much lower than that of insurance companies, that they send out each month to the various needs requested by other members. When a medical expense is encountered by members, they share their need with the organization, and after approval, payments are sent directly to other members.

Even though this isn’t insurance, it still qualifies for exemption from the ACA laws. That means no tax penalties if you choose not to accept Covered California!

Doctor Becerra’s experience with Samaritan Ministries:

Doctor Becerra has found that there are many benefits to participating in Samaritan Ministries. First, it allows flexibility when choosing doctors, since you don’t have to answer to an HMO and choose one of their preferred providers. You also receive cash discounts, since no insurance company will be billed.

The technical aspects of the organization are great, but it’s the personal touches that make it a stand-out alternative to the ACA. When Michelle, our office manager and the doctor’s wife, needed to have a procedure done, she was able to submit her medical bills as a need to the organization. Soon enough, shares from other members were showing up in the mail. But it wasn’t just the financial help that was appreciated; cards were sent as well, full of encouragement and prayers from like-minded Christians. Knowing that people across the country had Michelle in their thoughts was a great comfort!

So if you’re looking to an alternative for healthcare, Samaritan Ministries might be the option for you.
